How to Clean Traditional Mahogany Furniture

If you have a collection of beautiful traditional mahogany furniture, you may be wary of how to clean and treat the wood without damaging the surface. Mahogany differs somewhat from other woods in its grain, structure and density, and when it comes to cleaning, this type of wood needs its own special treatment, especially as an antique piece.

Cleaning your antique mahogany furniture depends on why it needs to be cleaned and the types of stains that have been left on the surface.

For simple dusting, a microfiber cloth is recommended for wooden surfaces as its super soft texture will not harm the wood in any way. When using any cleaning solution, ensure that it is intended specifically for wooden surfaces, and in this case mahogany.

Dust on a regular basis

Dusting on a regular basis will help the build-up of dirt and grime, as the dust in the air will have nothing to cling to, and polishing the wood can even act as a dust repellent when antistatic surface sprays are involved.

One of the best ways to clean dirt and grime from a mahogany surface is to use a special vinegar mixture to remove stains from the surface.

Simply mix two cups of white vinegar with one cup of water and gently rub into the mahogany with a soft rag. Wipe the solution into the surface along the direction of the grain rather than against it, which will help maintain the natural grain texture and visibility.

Wax on, wax off?

Waxing your mahogany is a great idea that allows furniture that is in high transit areas of your home such as mahogany hall stands retain their surface quality and prevent wear and tear. Waxing provides a barrier between the natural wood grain and any damage caused from keys, coins and every day wear and tear.

Apply a layer of wax at least once a month to retain this layer of protection, and you will see the natural lustre of the wood grain last longer.

Use a very soft or a microfiber cloth to rub in the wax to all surfaces of the mahogany furniture and then with a clean, dry cloth buff to a shine.

If you ever see scratches on your mahogany furniture, use iodine to treat the area using a fine paintbrush to apply the colour. The stain colour should match up well for most mahogany colours, allowing you to remove those scratches with the addition of a layer of wax and sealant.

Keeping your antique mahogany furniture in good condition is the best way to prevent any damage to it. Dust and polish your mahogany hall stands, doors, beds and other surfaces on a weekly basis to maintain their natural lustre and keep them looking their best for many years to come.
